Description

To rationalize and regulate waters of Indus River Basin (IRB) between Pakistan and India, Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was signed on 19 September 1960. Pressures such as population growth, urbanization, economic development and climatic extreme events like drought and floods, decreased level of sub-surface water and aquifers have substantially altered water demand and supply equation in Pakistan. Consequently, water has become a source of tension between the two countries and has the latent potential to turn into a conflict. There is a need to develop a framework which should enable both the countries to develop consensus for incorporating climate change related clauses and provisions in IWT.
